Electronically Assisted Astronomy (EAA) is a corner of the amateur astronomy hobby that uses cameras and electronic viewing devices to enhance the viewing experience of dim fuzzy astronomical objects. The Celestron Origin smart telescope is half of this equation - this adapter is the other half. Parts you will need:
- StarSense Autoguider or AutoAlign mounting foot attached to your Origin (or other scope)
- Light-weight phone tripod mount (e.g. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0B2NP19CL?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title)
- PortKeys LEYE III electronic viewfinder (e.g https://www.amazon.com/dp/B091FB31GM?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title&th=1 )
- You will want Canon LP-E6 batteries or equivalent to power the viewfinder
- Four ¾ inch ¼-20 socket-head bolts and washers to attach the phone bracket and LEYE III to the adapter
- Two ¾ inch 10-24 thumb screws
- Two 10-24 square nuts
- Phone capable of HDMI output
- USB-C to HDMI adapter for your phone
Assembly after printing is pretty straightforward - put the 10-24 square nuts into the slots on the bottom of the adapter then thread the thumb screws through them until they are just visible in the dovetail channel. Attach the LEYE III with three ¼-20 socket-head bolts and washers. Attach the phone bracket with a ¼-20 socket-head bolt and washer (the extending portion should extend away from the LEYE III).
With assembly complete, plug a battery in to the LEYE III and power it on, slide the adapter onto your telescope's mounting foot and tighten the thumb screws, get your phone running your astronomy app (e.g. Origin app), plug the USB-C to HDMI adapter in to the phone and the LEYE III, and start observing!
Note that the LEYE III has a crop mode which is highly recommended as it gets rid of most phone UI decorations and focuses on the image being shown.
