I printed at 0.2mm.  The bottom when printed, which becomes the top, is done with two layers at 45 degrees.  I used generic white PLA, but anything that is slightly transparent should do.  I got my display from https://core-electronics.com.au/glowbit-matrix-8x8.html in Australia.
