NOTE!!! This model requires that you have the required NeoPixel Rings, microprocessor, and the skills and knowledge of how to use them. This print merely provides the parts needed to make them fit models designed for Bambu's LED Lamp Kit-001. You need to bring your own NeoPixel rings, soldering skills and programming skills.
What are NeoPixels?
NeoPixels are individually addressable RGB or RGBW LEDs. NeoPixel is a product name coined by Adafruit, but there are certainly plenty of other makers of addressable RGBs. In this case, however, I am specifically talking about the Adafruit product, as these particular devices are needed to fit the prints.
This model allows for four different configurations:
- 16 neopixel ring only
- 16 neopixel ring plus 7 neopixel “jewel”
- 12 neopixel ring only
- 12 neopixel ring plus 7 neopixel “jewel”
Preparation of the NeoPixel rings:
The neopixel rings will come with small “rough” areas on the outside edges which is where they were attached to the master board during manufacturing. Note the photo with the red areas circled. Each ring may have up to four of these areas. The printed parts are very snug, so you will need to file or sand those spots on the rings down until they are smooth and flush. Use care when doing so, as the boards are fiberglass, and breathing the dust is a bad idea.
Printing the Parts:
For the lens, a clear, translucent, or possibly, white filament is recommended. I printed mine in clear PETG on a textured plate, and got a nice diffused translucent lens from it. With clear and translucent filaments, in general, the slower you print, the more clear the result will be. Note that you can skip the lens if you wish.
For the rest of the parts, I recommend a PLA+, PETG, or other filament with a little flex to it. Regular PLA might be too rigid.
Which parts?
For all models, you will need one NeoPixel-Lamp-Casing, and optionally, one NeoPixel-Lamp-Lens.
For the 16 pixel ring you need the NeoPixel-Lamp-16-pixel-frame.
If you are using the 7 pixel jewel with the 16 pixel ring, you need the NeoPixel-Lamp-7-pixel-frame.
If you are not using the 7 pixel jewel, you can use either the NeoPixel-Lamp-7-pixel-frame or the NeoPixel-Lamp-Spacer. Or you can skip that if you don't mind not being flush to the bottom.
For the 12 pixel ring, you need the NeoPixel-Lamp-12-pixel-frame and the NeoPixel-Lamp-Spacer.
If you wish to also use the 7 pixel jewel, it should fit inside the 12 pixel ring on top of the spacer. You will probably wish to glue the rings together. The 7-pixel-frame will not fit. Note that if you do use the 7 pixel jewel, you will need to solder the wires to the bottom side.
A note on using the 7 pixel jewel with the other rings:
- You may wish to determine where pixel 1 is on each for alignment purposes if it matters and you don't want to have to compensate in code.
- At least for mine, the 7 pixel jewel goes from center out, and in a different rotation direction from the 16 pixel ring.
Assembly
Place your ring/jewel into the appropriate frames. For the 12 and 16 pixel rings, this will be from the “bottom” side of the frame with the pixels facing down toward the print-bed side. The leaves the neopixels themselves flush with the front of the frame. For the 7-pixel jewel used with the 16 pixel ring, it inserts from the top of the 7-pixel-frame facing upward. These should be a snug fit.This If it's not, you may need to use glue. For the 7 pixel jewel, if you are aligning with the outer ring, you may need to rotate it in the frame so the legs of the frame don't overlap where wires will be soldered.
Solder your wires to the rings, but don't cut ends yet. If you are using a ring and a jewel, you obviously will need to cut to length, but be careful of wire routing, etc. Once it's soldered up, I recommend testing using clip leads on the wires before final assembly.
Place the casing face-down, add the lens (optional), then put the neopixel frames into the case, paying attention to where the wire slot is. Again, this should be a snug fit. If not, you may need to use glue. Once assembled, I recommend testing again, then if needed, glue the wires into place, then cut as appropriate for how you will connect them to your microprocessor.
