An experiment that hoped to make attractive ornaments by reducing, ("decimating"), the number of triangles in an STL file. A number of programs, MeshLab, Meshmixer, etc., are available which simplify STL files in this manner.
"bird_original.stl" was chosen for decimation. It was created with a Revopoint Mini 2 3D scanner from a garden ornament and contains over 100,000 triangles. It was simplified to a small STL file, "bird_deci_one.stl", which contains 84 triangles and then simplified again to a still smaller STL file, "bird_deci_two.stl", which contains 52 triangles.
The three above stl files were pierced by a tapered cylinder which can hold a thin wire serving as a hanger. "bird_original_holed.stl", "bird_deci_one_holed.stl" and "bird_deci_two_holed.stl".
Finally the edges of the triangles in the holed versions of the simplified files were decorated with cylinders. "bird_deci_one_edged.stl" and "bird_deci_two_edged.stl".
All files print without support. OpenScad code is provided.
