Summary
Here's my version of a solder holder for splicing wires together or soldering wires to part leads.
I wanted something that would hold a variety of different sized wires as well as objects for soldering with no bells and whistles. This tool will handle anything from 30 gauge wire to 6mm high objects like the microswitch in the heading image.
The gripping force ranges from 1.5lb to 4.0lb.
Bill of Materials:
As well as the 3D printed parts, you will need:
- 1x M5x15 screw
- 1x M5 washer
- 1x M5 nut
- 2x 33mm long compression springs (McMaster-Carr Part Number 94125K542)
- Optional: Silcon/Felt furniture protectors for the base of the soldering holder
Assembly steps:
- Place the two "jaws" inside the "rear" piece.
- Put the M5 nut into the space in the "front piece.
- Put the "front" piece with nut over the "rear" piece with the jaws.
- Slide a spring into each of the bottom of the "jaws".
- Place the base over the "front"/"rear"/"jaws"/spring assembly.
- Insert the M5x15 screw and washer into the base and tighten.
- Optional: Add any furniture protectors to the bottom of the base.
EDIT:
I've been told that the 9/32" x 2" Home Depot Spring (P/N: 1000127103) also works, but you should cut three turns from it.

Notes:
Total print time will be around 4 hours.
I printed the "front", "back" and "jaws" (two of them) at 100% infill all together. This was followed by the "base" separately with 60% infill.
The print orientations are:
- "rear", flat side down
- "jaws", either flat side
- "front", flat side down
- "base", bottom side down
