Backstory

Every modern kitchen in a home has one of those drawers that are an absolute chaotic mess affectionately known as the junk drawer. You know there are several items in it that essential to a functional kitchen in there somewhere, but never in any sort of organization (let's all be honest here). In my last drawer organization model, the Gridfinity Melitta #4 coffee filter holder, I vowed to Gridfinity-ify my drawers and aside from standard bins just to get the organization rolling, we also got a new can opener which needed a home.

An Awkward Tool to Store

The can opener, which I hadn't been able to find an exact make/model number (though looks similar to Canslab openers or Toucan from a brief search), came with a couple attachments including an extra gear, blade, bottle opener, and USB charging cable. Quite the bundle of accessories that would have ultimately got lost in the aforementioned junk drawer. So, to save space and add spots just for those accessories, I modeled up a holder using the Gridfinity workbench in FreeCAD to keep practicing my modeling skills. I followed a similar process to my filter model, by first taking a picture next to a ruler, scaling that image in FreeCAD, then adding the appropriate sketched and pockets for the opener and accessories.

Recommendations and Advisements

Included in the files are 6-unit and 8-unit height STLs, as well as the FreeCAD model I created. The 6-unit height model I printed goes about halfway up this can opener, which makes for an easy grip to take the opener out of the holder. The 8-unit high model is a bit taller, so might be a little more difficult to pluck from the drawer. Within the FreeCAD model, feel free to edit height or the shape of your holder, though please note that most of the holder's sketches are not constrained. Modify them at your own peril, but please feel free to remix to your heart's content.

Common print settings (e.g., 0.2mm layer height, 2 perimeters, 15% infill, etc.) and PLA (e.g., Polymaker Polyterra PLA) seemed to work for me. Choose your own adventure and what meets your your mileage may vary.
