How I Designed This

Step 1
Trace the outline I'll need for the recess of the mouse
Step 2
Create a reference line to determine "ground level" and get a correct rotation of the trackball, done by propping the trackball up and finding the comfortable angle, then doing the same with the paper, creasing it at table level.
Step 3
Mark a reasonable grid. This will allow for a spline or a wrapped point cloud for the silhouette of the mouse.
Step 4
Measure the traced trackball at each point vertically from the marks at "table level". I chose .5 Cm as the point frequency,
Step 5
Model the footprint of the trackball. I used arbitrary Z points to project a 3d representation of the area where the stand and trackball would interact.
Step 6
Then I made the prototype. I'd hoped it might work, and tried to minimize the ledge size. This is seen in the development picture in teal. This was basically a set of cubes to provide an angle and a stand, plus a cone behind to expand the footprint for security when supporting the trackball.
Step 7: Revision
I found that the angle was good, but my guess was a little too high and the small ledge wasn't large enough to hold the trackball. I also found that it wasn't tall enough or wide enough to be stable, and that the arc wasn't quite right. I followed the same process I used with the paper on the model, and used the difference between printed and marked edge to adjust that. I also expanded the base cone and added additional vertical support for greater stability of the whole and of the trackball.
