Name & Title
Molag Bal, the Harbinger of Domination
Titles: Lord of Chains, Father of Vampires, Tyrant of Souls
Core Theme
Molag Bal embodies domination, enslavement, and corruption of mortal will. His ultimate goal is to subjugate all planes under his rule, turning free will into chains and life into undeath. In a D&D context, he fits as a fiendish entity beyond the Lower Planes, perhaps a unique Archfiend or quasi-deity who rivals demon lords and archdevils.
Domain & Influence
Alignment: Lawful Evil (with sadistic tendencies)
Suggested Cleric Domains: Death, Trickery, Tyranny (homebrew), or War
Patron Type for Warlocks: Fiend or custom “Prince of Chains”
Plane: A twisted reflection of the Shadowfell or a custom layer of the Nine Hells called The Chainscape, a realm of black iron fortresses, rivers of molten silver, and skies filled with screaming souls.
Appearance
Molag Bal manifests as a towering, horned figure clad in jagged black armor, his body fused with chains that writhe like serpents. His face is a cruel mockery of a mortal visage, with fanged jaws and burning eyes that pierce the soul.
Goals
Domination of Mortal Souls: He seeks to enslave entire civilizations, binding their spirits to his eternal service.
Creation of Vampirism: In this setting, vampirism is his gift—a curse that turns mortals into instruments of his will.
Planar Conquest: Molag Bal dreams of merging the Material Plane with his Chainscape, creating a world where freedom is an illusion.
Cult & Worship
Symbols: A spiked wheel or a chain coiled around a skull.
Followers: Tyrants, slavers, corrupt nobles, and vampires.
Rituals: Blood sacrifices, binding oaths, and acts of cruelty to prove dominance.
Temples: Hidden fortresses or underground sanctums filled with iron chains and altars of bone.
Boons & Curses
Boons: Vampiric blessings, domination magic, immunity to charm/fear.
Curses: Those who betray him suffer eternal torment as chained wraiths.
Stat Block Suggestion
Treat Molag Bal as a CR 30 entity, similar to an Archfiend:
Legendary Actions: Chain Lash, Soul Drain, Command Undead
Lair Actions: Summon Chains, Crush Will, Spread Vampiric Plague

The Chainfall Prophecy: A cult seeks to open a portal to the Chainscape, merging it with the Material Plane.

Magic Items of Molag Bal
Below are bespoke items themed for Molag Bal. Each includes rarity, attunement, and balanced 5e-style mechanics. Cursed properties are flagged where applicable.
Mace of the Lord of Chains (Artifact, attunement by a Lawful Evil creature)
A heavy black-iron mace wreathed in spectral chains.
Weapon (mace) +3.
Chainbreaker: On a hit, deal an extra 2d8 necrotic damage. If the target is restrained, deal an additional 2d8 force.
Dominion Charges (5/day): Spend 1 charge to cast command or hold person; 2 charges for bestow curse; 3 charges for dominate person (DC 18).
Soul Siphon: When you reduce a humanoid to 0 HP, you can siphon its will. Regain 15 HP and gain advantage on your next attack or save before the end of your next turn.
Crushing Edict: As an action (3 charges), exude a 20‑ft radius aura for 1 minute. Creatures of your choice in the aura have disadvantage on Strength and Wisdom checks and saving throws.
Curse — Chain of Obedience: While attuned, you have disadvantage on saving throws against domination effects from Molag Bal, his avatar, or items keyed to his cult. Breaking attunement requires a remove curse cast at 7th level or a week-long ritual shattering sworn oaths (DM adjudication).
Destroying the Artifact: The mace can only be destroyed by breaking it upon an anvil consecrated by a redeemed vampire who voluntarily renounces all domination (very rare story condition).
Black Soul Prism (Very Rare, wondrous item, attunement required)
A faceted obsidian crystal that traps mortal essence.
Soul Capture: When a humanoid dies within 30 ft, the Prism can store its soul (DC 15 CHA save negates). A stored soul fuels the prism for charges equal to the soul’s CR (minimum 1).
Spell Fuel: Spend 1 charge to add +2 to a spell attack or spell save DC for a spell you cast; spend 3 charges to cast hold person; spend 5 charges to cast dominate person (DC 16).
Siphoned Resolve: As a bonus action, spend 1 charge to gain temp HP = your proficiency bonus + CHA mod.
Dimming: If the Prism has 0 charges, you have disadvantage on death saves until you feed it (curse-like but not a hard curse).
Dark Resonance: Any creature with a stored soul in the Prism is haunted; they occasionally hear the soul’s whispers. If you willingly release a stored soul to the Chainscape, you gain 1 Favor with the cult.
Shackles of Tyranny (Rare, wondrous, attunement by a creature of Evil alignment)
Black iron manacles etched with legality runes.
Binding Law: As an action, you can lock these shackles on a restrained creature. While shackled, the creature is restrained and has disadvantage on casting spells requiring somatic components; if it casts a spell, it must succeed on a DC 15 CON check or the spell fails.
Arcane Suppression: 3/day, you can emit an aura (15‑ft radius) for 1 minute that imposes disadvantage on checks to escape grapples and on concentration checks.
Warden’s Grip: You have advantage on grapple checks while holding the shackles.
Curse: If you go 7 days without binding a creature in the shackles, you gain exhaustion (1) until you do.
Signet of the Chainscape (Very Rare, amulet, attunement)
A spiked silver sigil bearing the wheel of chains.
Aura of Tyranny: Creatures of your choice within 10 ft have disadvantage on saving throws against being charmed or frightened by you.
Edges of the Realm: 1/week, you and up to 5 willing creatures teleport to a Chainscape threshold (DM-chosen location keyed to Molag Bal) or back to the spot you departed from.
Unyielding Will: You have resistance to necrotic damage and advantage on saves vs. charm/frighten.
Branding Echo: After using Edges of the Realm, you bear a faint chainmark for 24 hours; creatures of Good alignment can sense your corruption (DC 15 Insight).
Chainweaver Whip (Very Rare, weapon, attunement)
A braided chain-whip humming with subjugating magic.
Weapon (whip) +2, finesse, reach.
Entangle: On a hit, the target must succeed on a DC 15 STR save or be restrained until the end of its next turn.
Pull: As a bonus action after hitting, you can pull a Medium or smaller creature 10 feet closer to you (if it’s no more than one size larger than you).
Lash of Edicts: 3/day you can cast command as part of the attack.
Cruel Cadence: If the target is already restrained, you deal an extra 1d8 necrotic damage.
Contract of Bal (Rare, consumable scroll, no attunement)
A parchment of barbed runes.
Use: When signed by both parties (willing or coerced), the target is affected by geas (save DC 16) with an additional clause: if they break the geas, they take 5d10 psychic damage and are frightened of the contract holder for 1 minute (no save).
Loopholes: Clever wording can reduce the severity of geas effects (DM adjudication). Dispel magic (DC 16) or destroying the contract breaks the effect.
Crown of the Vampire King (Very Rare, wondrous item, attunement by a creature with Lesser Vampirism or vampiric traits)
An iron circlet studded with dark garnets.
Feeding Rite: When you use Vampiric Bite, you can add your proficiency bonus to the necrotic damage and gain resistance to all damage until the start of your next turn.
Nocturnal Majesty: You gain advantage on Intimidation checks and can cast fear 1/day (DC 16).
Command Nightspawn: As an action 1/day, issue a mental command to vampires and vampire spawn within 60 ft. Each affected creature must succeed on a DC 16 WIS save or obey one brief order for 1 round.
Curse: If you go 3 days without feeding, the crown imposes sunlight hypersensitivity (you take 10 radiant damage each minute in direct sunlight) until you feed.
Iron Ledger of Oaths (Rare, wondrous item, attunement)
A heavy codex that records bound promises.
Record Oath: As an action, inscribe a creature’s spoken promise in the Ledger. For 24 hours, the creature has disadvantage on checks made to lie about that promise and on saving throws against enchantment spells cast by you.
Reveal Falsehood: 2/day, as an action, you can name a creature that broke an inscribed oath within the last week; the Ledger glows and points toward the creature for 1 minute (as locate creature).
Sever Clause: 1/week, erase one line to end a single magical binding affecting the named creature (works like remove curse).
Integrating with Your Warlock Patron & Molag Bal (CR 30)
Warlock Synergy: Your Chains of Subjugation feature stacks narratively with items like Chainweaver Whip and Shackles of Tyranny. Consider granting +2 to the DC of Chains of Subjugation when the warlock wields either item.
Cult Progression: At Renown 26, grant the warlock Tyrant’s Mark and access to the Black Soul Prism network.
Boss Design: In Molag Bal’s lair, items like the Mace of the Lord of Chains serve as a set piece—either wielded by his Hand or as an objective the party must destroy (using the artifact’s destroy condition).
Adventure Hooks Using the Cult & Items
The Silent Plea: A city’s bells go silent as contracts rewritten in iron law spread—players must find and destroy the Iron Ledger of Oaths fueling the plot.
Prism Market: A black auction sells Black Soul Prisms containing leaders and activists; the party races to free the souls before they’re traded to the cult.
Crown’s Betrayal: A High Dominator wearing the Crown of the Vampire King loses control as hunger spirals, threatening the cult’s delicate order.
Edicts of the Mace: Rumors say the Mace of the Lord of Chains can destroy a planar anchor linking the Material Plane to the Chainscape—but only if borne by someone who rejects domination.
