Summary
This is my interpretation on the Dual Band Yagi (7x 70cm elements, 4x 2m elements) originally designed by KG0ZZ that is primarily built from steel clothes hangers and a wooden 1x2 stake. I wanted the ability to make fine adjustments without major rework- so I made the following changes:
- Used a garden stake sourced from Fred Meyers that measures 3/4x3/4x42 inches (not 1x2)
- Sourced hangers that had insulated steel wire that had an outer diameter of 1/8 inch from Fred Meyers
- Designed 3D printed wire holders that can be slid up and down the stake, and secured into the stake with M2 screws. This allows for spacing fined tuning. The antenna elements are clamped in place with M2 screws, trapping them in the grooves. This allows for element in/out fine tuning by loosening the screws. The driven elements are trapped by M3 bolts (you must drill out the existing 3D printed holes in those locations with a hand drill, I recommend just under 3mm so that the bolt creates its own threads when tightening it into place. This way the 2 meter elements stay trapped when the nuts on the opposite side are loosened. That way you are not juggling 4 loose elements- just two at a time.
- Designed a handle with an adjustable forearm torque bar so that wrist fatigue is reduced
I highly recommend bolting a cellphone mount to the side of the handle and using an app such as Satellite Tracker Pro to help with aiming the yagi at satellites, or Apple Maps to point it accurately at your nearest repeater, etc. I also used RG-58U coax, so the routing holes are sized for that type of cable (0.23" internal diameter).
It is worth noting that in 2025 a 10 pack of hangers to make this yagi is now $6. With the stake and 3D printing material this antenna design is now about $12, not counting the coax and connector (I got mine for free from a fellow ham).
After tuning (gap between my driven elements ended up around 1/2", and actual length on all elements was about an 1/8" shorter than original specs) I found the SWR to be pretty good for an antenna made out of a stick and coat hangers! Perfect for working the ISS repeater.
