The ‘strap’ snapped in my M46 shifter. IPD sells a kit PN - 106659. This part is just the plastic joiner between the handle you lift up and the piece that needs to lift above the reverse lock out bracket to allow you to select reverse.

It has been on my car for several thousand km's now with no issues. 

Hopefully this saves someone else time and money as well.
