I wanted to have a nice budget microscope and bought a cheap usb one. It is good enough for the price (7€) but even with a good light source it didn't get a nice quality image.
I disassembled it and found that the main parts consists of a usb camera sensor, an adjustable part for the lens and a cheap M12 pinhole lens (3mm hole size).
The solution in my head was simple: replace the bad quality sensor with a better one, in this case i used a 1080p webcam (WC002WA-2)
This post contains the adapter i used for this specific model but you can easily execute the idea with any other webcam and lens, the main goal is to show how you can create a budget friendly yet powerful microscope using spare parts.
BOM:
- x1 webcam image camera sensor
- x1 m12 pinhole lens
- x1 a good source of light (in my case i used a 220v microscope led ring)
- x1 lamp arm to hold the microscope
Notes:
- For better results print in black pla
- the mount should be adjusted to desired height for focus, if you still get a blurry image the mount will probably need more height.
In the future I will try to upload a model of the adjustable focus mount and i aim to try more lenses since i believe that a better quality one can make a big difference.
