This is my design for a led hexagon setup. Printed in transparent PLA, giving it a nice glow on the wall.
Features:
- Cable channels underneath so it sits flush
- Small recessed area around the edge for a diffuser cut with a laser, or you can use paper like I did
- Pins around the inside edge to hold the led strip in place, as the adhesive often isn't strong enough on such tight bends
- Hexagon
Instructions:
First, note that these are a suggestion only. You can use whatever hardware and software you want to have these light up, this is just what I did. Also, I won't go into details on how I wired it and more, so some experience is good, but there are plenty of excellent guides out there too. This is one of my favourites.
First, here are the materials
- Hexagons (x4)
- 1m WS2812B led strip
- Wemos d1 mini esp8266 clone
- 5v 3a DC barrel plug power supply
- Barrel plug to wires adapter
- Wires
- Micro USB to USB-A
- First off, I figured out a layout I liked. It was around now I realised there was no good way to join these, so ended up using hot glue. I haven't been bothered to redesign it, so you'll have to figure out what method works best for you
- Once I had them all glued together, I soldered the 4 sections of led strip together, making sure the wires were threaded through the holes and that there was enough slack so they reached each other.

- After a section was fully soldered, I stuck it down in it's hexagon
- Now, I had 4 hexagons with led strips all joined together, and just three loose wires, power, ground and data in
- Next, it's time to program your controller. I chose to use WLED (Github) because it's easy, popular and has a ton of cool effects. They have documentation there, so I won't go into detail on how to upload and wire it.
- Finally, after testing all the leds worked, I needed a diffuser. I just cut some paper, but you can use diffused plastic too.

It definitely could have been an awful lot neater, but I'm happy with it nonetheless.
Also, one other thing to note. I mounted it above my bed, and so needed somewhere to mount the controller. After finding some random little enclosure, I deigned and printed a hook that goes over my shelf and holds the controller. Works perfectly, so I've included the hook file just in case you want it.
