Summary
This model of the DNA helix will light up your room. Every step can glow in its own combination of two rgb colors from both sides. There are 8 programmed color modes that can be switched with a push button or an ir remote. The speed of the light animation is adjustable with a poti.

parts:
- arduino nano
- 2x RGB - LED stripe with 16 LEDs (one LED every 33mm): WS2812B WS2811IC from GreenICE
- poti 100KOhm
- push button
- VS1838B IR Receiver Module
- 5V power supply (>1A)
- 1000µF capacitor
- jumper/switch
- 4 little screws
- transparent plastic glue
- 60mm x 80mm circuit board
Make sure that the poti and the push button are on the upper side of the board and fit into the intended holes. Everthing else should be soldered on the downside. There also is a hole for the USB wire. The USB Port of the Arduino should point in that direction.
The arduino can run with the 5V power supply if you bypass the jumper/switch. While programming the arduino via USB wire, you should disconnect the arduino from the power supply for safety reasons.
If you want to use an ir remote, just use the remote, while the arduino is connected to your computer and the arduino IDE runs. The code of your remote should be printed in the IDE plotter. You can change it at the marked position in the code.
The steps of the DNA model can be glued together one by one after leading the LED strips through the slit. There are two sizes of the steps, so you can fit the LEDs optimally.

Bauteile:
- Arduino Nano
- 2x RGB - LED Strip mit 16 LEDs (eine LED pro 33mm): WS2812B WS2811IC von GreenICE
- Poti 100KOhm
- Druckknopf
- VS1838B IR Receiver Module
- 5V Netzteil (>1A)
- 1000µF Kondensator
- Jumper/ Schalter
- 4 kleine Schrauben
- durchsichtiger Plastikkleber
- 60mm x 80mm Platine
Alternative: WiFi control with ESP8266
Replace the following parts with an ESP8266:
- arduino nano
- poti 100KOhm
- push button
- VS1838B IR Receiver Module
Connect the datainputs from the led-strips with the D1 and D2 outputs of the ESP8266.
Use the ESP8266_led_helix.ino and base_for_ESP8266. There is space for a 60mm x 80mm circuit board, where you can place an ESP board, the capacitor and the connections to the powersupply and the LED strips. Don't forget to set your network name and passwort in the ESP8266_led_helix.ino.
