I think this is the coolest thing I've printed to date. Just like in great woodworking joinery the joint becomes a beautiful part of the finished design. No glue or screws or tools required. I originally saw the Yanko Design article online and immediately began wondering if I could 3D print the spiral joinery grid. The joint is based on the Fibonacci spiral or golden spiral. I simply imported an image of the golden spiral into Fusion and traced a sketch over it using the spline tool. I then printed just four small panels as proof of concept (see the file called "Spiral Panels 4 Small"). To my surprise, the first attempt was a complete success. I then created the model for the full grid and printed it with equal success.
Now I'm just imaging all of the things I could make utilizing this spiral joinery technique. My next project will be a drawer organizer system, but the possibilities are endless. I would love to see what all you creatives in the community can come up with! Please share your remakes!
