The main purpose of a Key Light switch is that the lights can not be turned on accidentally like they would with a normal light switch where one can lean on it or bump it accidentally. In our case this has proven to be very useful as a light switch for the main lights of our darkroom so it takes some effort to turn them on preventing unwanted light exposure of photographic materials.
