Summary
Got a few spare LED downlights floating around that you want to use as a mini flood light? Grab a few parts and throw one of these together!
The base has a thread and a nut over it, which holds the legs in either the open or folded position.
Simply undo the nut, fold the legs down or up, and tighten the nut in place.
Instructions
Non printed parts:
1x LED Downlight - Do not use anything other than a low wattage LED, or you will probably melt your plastic ;)
1x 16mm dowel rod - 350mm long
1x 12v battery - I use my 3S lipos with a low voltage buzzer on the balance plug
1x cable to connect the downlight to a battery, you'd be looking for something with an MR16 connector on one end, and you'd need to solder an appropriate connector on the other end for your battery.
2x cable ties
5x M4 nuts
3x 25mm M4 screws
2x 20mm M4 screws
1x short wood screw
Printed parts:
1x Light Tower Base
1x Light Tower Nut
3x Light Tower Legs
1x Light Tower Holder and Hinge (if you want to use a downlight)
If you find that the downlight holder in the above STL is too small, print the 'holder only' STL. It has a bit more space, but may be a little too loose depending on how well calibrated your printer is.
I've got it all! Now what?
Jam the dowel down into the base as tight as you can. The hole is tapered, so it should jam in no problem, if not, put a bit of glue in the hole with it.
Push a leg into one of the holes, ensuring the tapered section is facing outwards (this means it should sit on the floor more evenly when it is deployed).
Push an M4 nut into a hole for that leg, they are quite tight, so if it doesnt quite fit, dont be too fussed. Push a 25mm M4 screw through the hole and tighten it up. If the nut didn't push into the hole, make sure the nut is aligned properly with the hole and tighten the screw up. It should pull in no worries.
Repeat steps 2 and 3 for the other two legs.
Screw the nut onto the base with the legs folded down. You will find that they can't fold up anymore. Neat huh?
Push the two final M4 nuts into the lower part of the downlight holder. As in step 3, if they dont push in easily, tighten a screw up in it, and it will pull the nut into place.
Put the downlight into the upper half of the downlight holder. It will be easier to put the light in now before attaching it to the other downlight part, as it should be a little bit flexible.
Drill a hole into the end of the dowel, and screw the downlight holder into place with your wood screw.
Screw the upper half of the downlight holder into the lower half.
- Attach your cable to the pole with your two cable ties, ensuring you have enough space at the top so you can rotate your lamp around without putting too much strain on your cable.
And you are done!!
I created this part using OpenSCAD, but unfortunately I have lost the code for the top part. If there is enough demand, I will recreate it and post it up.
I used syvwlch's thread library, but i really didn't do a great job of utilising it! I didn't spend much time playing with it... Sorry!
