The AMS lite spool mounts provide a few advantages over the simple peg of the original H2D external spool mount:
- Built in tensioner to prevent filament tangling
- Smoother operation, less rolling resistance, more even rolling resistance
- Also just satisfying to install and remove spools
The AMS lite spools mounts can be bought on their own here (you must purchase the orange ones as they rotate clockwise which is the direction the H2D external spools feed in).
I tried an existing external spool mount adapter to use the AMS lite spool mounts for the H2D, but it had a plethora of issues, so I remodeled one completely from scratch that fixes all of the problems. See a full list of the features further down.
This model has an optional variant with a TPU face that interfaces against the side of the H2D for better stability, similar to the rubber pad on the original external spool mount. Print the TPU face separately and superglue it on. Alternatively there is a part in the 3MF Bambu studio file that has the TPU pad not separated from the bracket so you can just print it all in your material of choice and it should still work fine.
I use two as the H2D has two external spool mounting points. The bracket is compatible with the PTFE fitting mount from the original spool mount, just remove it by undoing the screw with a hex key and then use the screw to screw it into this part, or source a screw on its own - I believe an M3x12 plastic tapping pan head screw such as this one (Australia) will work (a normal M3 x 12 machine socket head screw will probably work as well). However, as seen in the images, I instead use my H2D Dual PTFE Fitting Mount for TPU Bypass to have two tubes feeding from the top external spool mount. One of which is for the left nozzle, and the other for the TPU bypass input, which combines with the AMS 2 Pro output into the right nozzle via my PTFE Y-Joiner for H2D TPU External Spool Bypass. This allows printing from either the AMS 2 Pro or from the TPU bypass to the right nozzle without having to reach in and disconnect and reconnect PTFE tubes on the printhead. For those unfamiliar, the bypass must be used to print TPU on the H2D, as the TPU cant be fed through the filament buffer for the regular right nozzle input (TPU can only be printed on the H2D's right nozzle as the right nozzle stays stationary and the left one moves up and down for nozzle switching which Bambu says causes issues with feeding TPU). I also use my H2D Lower External Spool Filament Guide to guide the bottom external spool's filament into either of the two inputs on the top external spool mount via this part.
Features:
- Fits tightly to the spool mount mounting point and around the outside of the printer - no wobbling or sagging.
- Is mounted at an angle like the original external spool mount, so that the PTFE tube fitting is in the correct location (slightly higher up and not horizontal with the center of the spool), which means the filament is not being pulled around a sharp corner as it enters the tube (especially as the spool gets low). This geometry also allows for sturdier mounting to the printer compared to a horizontal design.
- Includes slots for the AMS lite spool mount snap features to snap into as they are pushed on, so they are attached properly and do not come off with the spools when spools are removed. They can still be removed by pulling with more significant force.
- Shaft part that the AMS lite mounts snap to is a separate part that is threaded onto the main bracket. This means it can be printed vertically for a much more accurate circular profile, enabling smoother turning of the AMS Lite spool mount. The thread direction matches that of the spool feeding direction, so the spools movement can never loosen the thread, although it is probably tight enough for this to never happen even if the directions didn't match.
