Summary
This is a phone stand I designed and printed for my own use and that of my coworkers. I went through three iterations of the the design and probably could use one more iteration if I was going to make more (I'd add a shallow box in the base to fill with change for ballast). The current design is simple, rigid, and minimizing print material. I left the name plate space empty so that future printers can add their own details.
How I Designed This
The entire design was done in Solidworks. Overall dimensions are h,l,w (5",4",3")
The design objectives were:
fit my phone with the charging cord attached
provide a secure support while using the phone in the dock
ease of printing
One of the design constraints was that the bend radius of most cords is ≈2.5 inch, which is why the phone stand is so tall. This is not an issue on my desk as vertical space is fairly available, while horizontal space is at a premium. I have an Amazon Basics charging cord, which uses the bulkiest connector that I've ever seen and it fits in the 0.5 inch gap just fine.
The first dock I designed used a very bad angle to hold the phone up, it was leaned too far back to be functional. I played around with a few angles after that before settling on 60°. This provides good viewing from a seated position. The first design was a single line similar to a bent paperclip. This iteration looked great, but wouldnt work in PLA without using huge amounts of fill. The stand was too bouncy and was annoying to use the phone in. I added rigidity by supporting the large overhangs.
The other issue with my first design was that the base was too narrow and the phone would tip over if used. I thought about using a wide base for just the phone, but printing would require support material or playing with orientations and overhangs. In the end, I wanted to limit the number of visual features. I planned to lay this on its side and print without any support material. This design prints very cleanly, with only minor issues at the overhang around the charging cable relief.
