Design Concept
The Hot Rod Flexi is a simple design with multiple levels to allow easy painting of features,. It has movable joints to allow dynamic posing and play.
I have previously used the pause function in the slicer to change filament color during printing on my two color ribbon vase and liked the effect that can be achieved without the need for an automatic multi-color filament system so tried it out again with this model.
Purpose
This model serves as a fun and engaging toy for children and a fun design piece for enthusiasts of both cars and 3D printing. It is ideal for display, education on mechanics, and as a creative toy.
Printing Recommendations
When printing the Hot Rod Flexi, use a filament with moderate strength and flexibility, such as PLA+ or PETG, to ensure durable links. I used a variety of PLA Matt and PLA Silk. A 0.16 mm layer height is suggested to achieve high detail when using a variety of colors.
Assembly Instructions
The model is designed to print in one piece with articulating joints and no need for supports.
The .3mf file has pause breaks in the slice which allow for a manual change of the filament to print a multi-color version.
Stage 1 base
Stage 2 engine block
Stage 3 windows and wheel hubs
Stage 4 bodywork
Stage 5 tires
Care is needed when removing the multi-color model from the print plate as the bond between the different filaments can be a weak point.
