John Lewis, age 25, about to cross the Edmund Pettus Bridge on Bloody Sunday 1965 wearing his iconic trench coat. The peaceful protesters were marching to the state capitol in support of voting rights for African Americans. As they crossed the bridge they were assaulted by police officers in an attack so brutal it shocked the conscience of the nation.

John Lewis was elected to the US House of Representatives in 1986.
