Summary
The IKEA Vindriktning is an excellent platform for smart home integrations. However, available mods are based on just adding a D1 Mini that "listens" to the PM1006 while the onboard PCB keeps control over both the sensor and the LEDs. As a result, much of the potential of this platform remains unused (such as controlling LEDs, turning the fan on/off at specified intervals, changing PM2.5 limits and color schemes, etc.). A lot more flexibility is possible by adding just a few more parts (and spending more time). This is why I designed this thing.
This thing is designed to make the Vindriktning a fully controllable multisensor for smart home applications with almost zero modifications to the original enclosure. You will just need to expand the cable guiding hole to ~4-5mm diameter so that it fits more cables.
In this design, the original Ikea PCB is removed, the LEDs are replaced by a 8x WS2812b board, and the everything is controlled by a D1 Mini. The current version also includes a BMP180 and an 0.96" I2C oled display. Note that if you want to control the PM1006 fan, you will have to add a transistor. Note also that many other designs put the D1 mini inside the case. However, this will impact the temperature measurements, which is why I decided to put the ESP outside (and it just fits perfectly).
This thing contains:
- A WS2812b adapter with the size of the original PCB
- A frame to give the WS2812b mod enough room (versions with and without oled display mount are provided)
- A power distribution board (see pictures).
To build this, you will also need:
- D1 Mini (ESP8266)
- 8x WS2812b board (7 of 8 LEDs will be visible through the diffusor)
- BMP180 or an I2C sensor of your choice (optional)
- 0.96" I2C oled display (optional)
- Wires, and dupont connectors, pin headers, soldering iron
- hot glue gun, zip tie
