My daughter was wanting something better than a cardboard box to hold all of her new colored pencils. We came across LoboCNC's Expanding Colored Pencil Caddy and really liked it, but we thought we could improve it some. 

This variation adds viewing windows to the front of the base to use less filament and to allow easy viewing of short pencils. Depending on the brand, you may even be able to read the color name while the pencil is still in the case. 

There's an added lid for each section that fastens to the hooks on each base with rubber bands. This uses less filament than going full length and adjusts in height according to the pencil lengths. Holes in the top of the lid lock the longer pencils in place. They can also be used to help draw a music staff, write multiple copies at once, or be used for some interesting artwork. 

A single rubber band around the base and in between hooks can lock the sections in place to prevent sliding during transport. The pictured 100 pencil assembly can be picked up by one lid piece without issues. It also means that this can be carried upside down without the pencils falling out. (Assuming all lids are properly secured.) The lids don't interlock so that any lid can be removed to access any particular row. 

The holes for the rubber bands are small. This is intentional to prevent them from falling out and to provide as much bulk and reinforcement as possible.  I looped fishing line around the rubber band then threaded the line through the hole to pull the rubber band through. 

Instead of using a flat endpiece, the last piece in the assembly can be mounted to the wall. The rest of sections slide down and hang below that section when mounted. This frees up valuable desk/table space. The mount has a recess that allows raised text on the back of the last section, up to 1mm, for any personalization during slicing. 

Each section holds 10 pencils. Print and combine as many sections as needed.
