After some weeks of service, I must admit that the Rpi 3 is not the best candidate to build a robust NAS. The transfert speeds are poor, and the power needed to make 2 HDDs spin is really high for a little michoUSB plug...Moreover, using USB HDD for a NAS is not something recommended at all by data storage specialists.
I Had fun doing this project, that dipped me into the NAS world, and I learned a lot.
But if you want something reliable, you should consider using tomething else than a Rpi

update 12/03/2020 14H30 GMT : added wedge por 7mm thickness HDD ; this part is designed to fit as shown on the picture.
update 11/03/2020 15H25 GMT : added feets. must be glued. Tested with one HDD : it works !
update 3/03/2020 16H45 GMT : internal frame is now even more lighter, and the USB breakout board must now be screwed with M2.5 bolts, and not directly screwed in the plastic ; the internal frame have been reworked because the "SATA to USB3" adapters I recieved were a bit too thick. Now, it slides nicely.
I Upload my work if somebody is interested, but I cannot garantee it works 100% at the moment. Nevertheless, all seems perfect on the CAD program...
Remix of the PiNAS
All parts of the original PiNAS from araymbox have been modified :
Designed for the SATA to USB card like the one on the picture. The length to check is the distance between the edge ot che circuit board and the beginning of the SATA connector. If you need a specific length, fell free to ask me.
There is a place for a 40x40 fan (I recommend a Noctua fan, very quiet)
This enclosure design is adapted for the the Adafruit USB Micro B Breakout Board, worldwide buyable (see picture) and for SATA to USB adapter that can be buy on Amazon (see picture).
The air flow should be a bit better, and there are more vents.
There are 4 pockets to stick rubber feet if you want.
The *.step file is provided.
- There is few space for the cables, but it fits.
