One of my children installed Govee strip lights, a ribbon of RGB LEDs with “segmented color control” in their bedroom, and found that the glare from the LEDs where they were directly visible was distracting. They asked me to come up with a diffuser to soften the bright spots without significantly reducing the light they provide.
This model is the result of my experimentation.
Print in clear or milky white translucent filament; I only have clear PLA, and since it's a new model, I don't know if the heat from the LEDs will overcome the vents in the sides.
The model is parameterized in the provided OpenSCAD script, and somewhat extensive information is included in comments in that file. I also included a list of the Orca Slicer parameters that I used to print it.
Options easily set in the OpenSCAD script include:
- Length of the diffuser segments
- How many segments to put on the plate
- Optional “kit card” format
- Texture of the inside of the front of the diffuser
Other things that can be tweaked by changing global variable values include:
- Width and height of the channel in the diffuser
- Length of the “lips” that hold the diffuser on the light strip
- Spacing and size of ventilation holes in the sides of the diffuser strips
- Thickness of the side walls
- Spacing of the diffuser segments on the plate
Because the light strip is installed in the room of one of my children, I cannot include a picture of the diffuser strips in use, but we have another strip that, once put up somewhere other than a bedroom, I will try to get a picture of and add it here.
I'm including a few STL files for various configurations as samples. Because different printers and filaments may result in the diffuser parts being either too tight (not fitting easily over the LED strip light) or too loose (not fitting snugly enough), and the chance that more air space is needed around the light to allow sufficient cooling, I recommend opening the file in OpenSCAD and printing samples, tweaking the global parameters until you get a sample that fits, then setting the batch size and (if you want) kit-card option to print enough for your application.
You can also change the parameters to adapt the design to some other brand of strip lights. Though there are some in-line numeric literals (constant values) in the script, most of the important parts are set in global parameters.
I have not come up with a solution for corners yet. Perhaps someone might be inspired to design one and save me the trouble.
