M3 would work too, with a little slop. M4 nuts fit perfectly in the brackets though.
I sliced in Luban, Lychee and Cura - all 3 found errors in some of the .STLs that SketchUp didn't find on export. "Repair model" worked for each slicer and I never did find what flagged the error.

Assembly
I found it easier to use a slow setting plastic glue. On the first prototype I tried to use small squeeze clamps - this overcomplicated everything. Just use rubber bands and save yourself a headache :)
1) Glue the top and bottom shelves on and hold with rubber bands (do not get in the way of the notches for the back plates)
2) Bolt back plates and hangers together with M4x10 screws, washers and nuts
3) Glue in back assembly and bottom back piece
4) Glue in middle 4 shelves and use more rubber bands to hold until dry
How I Designed This
Designed in SketchUp with solid panels, then removed as much material as I was comfortable with while maintaining strength. The resulting model uses about 80% less filament with no degradation in usability
