This is a 2mm thin plate with a beveled edge and groove to accept Magsafe/Qi2 accessory magnets up to 1.7 mm thick.
The design is in 2 parts to avoid having to use supports, which would either scar the bevel or create a rough groove.
Printing
The bottom plate is 0.3mm thin, to ensure strong magnetism, so a 0.1mm height profile is recommended. I set a 0.2mm bottom layer then 0.1mm thereafter.
Requirements
- Isopropyl alcohol
- Epoxy resin
- Thin double-sided tape (eg. device repair tape)
- Magsafe/Qi2 accessory magnets
Note: Do not buy phone or case magnets as these will not work. Magsafe magnets are arranged in a Halbach Array which cannot be simply reversed. In my case, I disassembled an old magsafe accessory and reused the magnets.
Assembly
- Clean all parts with isopropyl alcohol for adhesive surface preparation
- Use a thin layer of epoxy to attach the bezel to the body.
- Apply epoxy in the groove and place the magnets, being careful to maintain the exact magnet order and direction.
- Fill the remaining groove with epoxy and let it cure.
- Apply double sided tape to attach it to your accessory.
