Most basic shotgun microphone holders you buy are completely stiff and lack an important adjustment axis: tilt. Now you can make one yourself with a 3D printer and under a dollar's worth of supplies that solves this problem. It can mount to any ¼" thread like what you find on tripods, many light stands and camera rigs. Of course with a customizable CAD file with a free license.
Non 3D printed parts
- 1 * ¼"-20 nut
- 3mm thick medium hardness foam
Pre-Print
The prerendered stl, 3mf and gcode files assume that you're using a Ø22mm microphone and 3mm thick foam. If that's not the case you will need to open the CAD file: Microphone_holder.scad in OpenSCAD to change the variable called microphone_D in the customizer and reexport part 1A. Measure your microphone while it's wrapped in your foam with a pair of calipers, make sure to squeeze it a bit while measuring or the fit will be too loose.
Print settings
I used a layer height of 0.3mm for all prints. Print in the same orientation as in the CAD file. Print parts 1A and 1B with autogenerated supports on build plate only. The other parts should not have any supports.
Post-printing/assembly
If you open the OpenSCAD file and select the ‘All’ part in the customizer you can see how it should look when assembled
- Remove supports: Parts 1A and 2A have in-model supports that can be easily removed with a pair of cutting pliars. Make sure to remove the supports under the tilt lock on part 2A or the tilt mechanism wont work at all.
- Optionally: Sand rounded edges and paint to make the parts look better
- Insert the nut into part 2A (a hammer might be needed)
- Insert the foam into part 1A and test fit the microphone, if it fits glue it in place
- Sand the mating surfaces of parts 1A and B until they fit tightly together, rotate in place and optionally secure with glue
- Sand the mating surfaces of part 1 and 2A until they fit tightly together while still being able to rotate
- Sand the mating surfaces of parts 2A and B until they fit tightly together, with part 1 in place, snap them together and optionally secure with glue
