I am switching to haversack and bedroll.  However, my bedroll has weight to it.  Its a thick canvas ground cloth (which is also the ouuter most layer of the bedroll, my 1 man tent and my MSS (sleeping bag) inside the tent.  I didnt want to have to single strap cross carry it on longer hikes, and I wanted it to be easy on easy off.

This is the fame I came up with.  It uses shoulder straps from an alice pack reproduction, though Im sure there are plenty similar straps available.  The bedroll is then strapped to the frame/plate.

It works quite well, allowing for a vertical carry.
