This design solves issues I have with my design process and how I use my items:
1. This allows easier prototyping of magsafe mounts. I can now prototype, slot the Mag-Gem in, see if it looks good, holds well, and if not, slot it out and try a different design.
2. Magsafe rings aren't cheap, so in order to save on cost, I can now just move the puck around, allowing for many more mounts with just the one magsafe ring. I feel more free to make the designs i come up with since it doesn't require spending money on more magnets.
3. The reason these magnets aren't cheap, and why I am using them instead of just sticking the already magnetic phone to a ferromagnetic ring, is because the magnetic attraction is STRONG. It stays attached even while using it on my bike around the city.
For materials:
1. I used PLA and PETG for my Mag-Gems, both work great.
2. The magsafe magnets I bought are the 2.5mm thickness version on this page: https://totalelement.com/collections/magsafe-neodymium-magnets . I don't believe its necessary to use these specifically, as long as you get the dimensions the same, other magsafe inserts should work.
The files:
1. The front and back files fit together but require some glue to hold together. I suggest using something like E6000 adhesive as it holds well, but you can still easily peel apart the two pieces from the small gap in the inner circles where the front and pack pieces meet. I suggest printing these pieces and the example slot flat on their backs, meaning with the registration indents on top for the Front and back. The model's overhands are meant to be easily printable.
2. The stl for the Slot template has a cutout to allow you to print it and test the fit with the Mag-Gem. The actual Fusion360 file has the untouched version, allowing you to model it into any mount you'd like easily.
3, I include 2 examples I quickly drew up to serve as simple examples. They are meant to show two possible ways to use the Mag-Gem, an open slot allows the free movement of the magnets, while the other screw-in version allows the user to pull their device off in any direction without it coming out. The photos I have posted show screw in version obviously.
Some other things, this is Qi charging compatible, and the center hole fits a qi coil, I'm working on a design that integrates it as well. The Mag-Gem is really strong, please be aware of the material you are using if you are placing it against your naked phone, it can pull in you device really fast and possibly damage it if you just let it fall onto the Mag-Gem.
Furthermore, the metal rings on the link I provided are not to be slept on! Along with the Mag-Gem or any strong magsafe compatible device, you can stick the ring onto a book or small photo frame, floodlight, and it makes them magsafe mount friendly.
My main hope is that people use this design in their own projects.
