We publish all the original files (send by the participants) as well as the aligned version shown in the final rendering. Feel free to reach out if you want to participate with your 3D scanner!
For scanning I used an automatic turntable and lots of 3D markers to help with tracking, the scanner was set
at the "too near" distance and 8 gain setting. I took 6 scans in total
from different angles. Each scan had around 600 frames and took under a
minute to capture, fusion at 0.1mm resolution setting took less than 10 seconds
for each scan. Surroundings and 3D markers had to be cleaned from each scan before alignment.For the alignment itself I tried 3 different softwares: Revoscan, Meshlab and hacky use of HP Scan 5.
Revoscan produces the noisiest result out of the three, alignment quality was not really there.
Meshlab was able to compute a much better alignment and with the poisson filter at 9 depth setting produced an ok mesh.
To be able to align the scans in HP Scan 5 I had to first mesh them using Cloud Compare, where I used the poisson filter at 9 depth setting + filtered out the excessive blob for each scan and exported them as objs. These obj files were later aligned in HP Scan 5 and fused at 300 setting, 0 sharpening. The result is an even tighter alignment although some detail was lost, probably during the Cloud Compare filtering step.
