A printable handbag
Project objectives:
- Design a functional clutch bag that can fit an iPhone.
- It enables glue-free printing and assembly, without the need to use any adhesives.
- It has an exquisite appearance and a sturdy structure, and it truly has practical value and can withstand daily use.
Unfortunately, I didn't fully achieve these goals. It's not so much a work in progress as it is a half-hearted proof of concept. However, it's time to take it out of the hard drive and share it online. In the future, I plan to learn from this experience, keep going, and try again.
Analysis of the problem:
- When slicing in RepG, the entire model took up to 24 hours — which not only exceeded my expected waiting time, but was also far from sufficient to support rapid iteration. Either we need to appropriately simplify the geometry, or switch to a slicing software that offers better performance and faster speed.
- It's not easy to make every corner stick firmly to the platform, especially when the second extruder head constantly interferes and lifts up the loose edges. Even if we use radical methods such as ABS paste to enhance adhesion, the surface effect is often unsatisfactory, and we still have to struggle to tear off the layers of adhered Kapton tape. As long as there is a printing error, the whole work will be in vain - in my work, there are about 5 flaws that need to be repaired.
- At present, I haven't found an ideal side-sewing solution. At this stage, I plan to use the plastic threading process commonly seen in children's friendship bracelets, or choose embroidery thread to complete the "blanket stitch" fixation, which can be used temporarily. However, this approach is clearly not ideal.
- If you want to truly maximize its practicality, this design must also be equipped with a chain or wristband buckle.
- If I could abandon the idea of "glue-free splicing" and adopt a multi-component combination design instead, I could have created a more aesthetically pleasing design.
- The hinge structure performs well, but its strength is slightly insufficient, making it difficult to withstand the frequent opening and closing over a long period of time.
What impresses me most is that the fabric of this "clutch bag" is delicate in texture and has a beautiful luster. If the design were more elegant and paired with more exquisite fasteners, I would definitely wear it without hesitation. As long as the adhesion performance of various parts can be further improved and the creative space of fabric printing can be expanded with the help of the double extrusion head technology, the possibilities of fabric printing will be limitless.
It should be noted that this "fabric" can only be bent along a single axis on each side - if you plan to use it in other ways, be sure to consider this in advance.
