This is a prototype. Don't expect it to work well.

I wanted to see if I could make a slide whistle without a plunger that sticks out. If we can move the stopper from the outside, the player can just move it on the instrument directly rather than needing a full-length piston.

Parts

• Plunger – a cylinder that goes inside the PVC pipe and blocks off the air to set the tone of the whistle
• Slider - Tube that fits on the outside of the PVC pipe to hold magnets that move the inner part
• Coupler - A thin tube adapter to go from the PVC pipe to a tenor recorder mouthpiece

Other Materials

• ¾ in PVC pipe (length depends on how you want to tune it but mine is around 2ft)
• Mouthpiece stolen from a Yamaha tenor recorder (YRT-304B)
• 6 4x2mm neodymium magnets (example)
• Super glue

Assembly

Inserting the magnets is tricky: Keeping the magnets in a stack, I pushed the bottom magnet into one of the holes on the outer ring and slid the rest of the stack over, moving to the next hole. Then make sure you've got the polarity reversed before doing the same on the inside-plunger piece. I did all this with a dry-fit before taking them out again to add a drop of glue to each.

The inside piece required some sanding and some WD-40 to slide nicely without getting stuck.
