Threaded inserts greatly improve the functionality of a model over self-tapping screws, especially if the model is to be dis-assembled. Much easier to design for, over captive nuts.
But inserting them into a finished print by hand can lead to mis-alignment.
There are several fully printed designs to hold the soldering iron square to the surface, but this approach utilises a Dremel Model 220 drill press, changing the holder to mount a soldering iron.
An added benefit is the ability of the drill press to index at 15 degree increments.
