The U-shape top member is tilted slightly downward and with wedge profile.  The opening fits snugly around the shelf, and is held in place by the weight of books. The lamp mains lead is kept in place and strain relieved by a conduit on the bottom member.

The lamp fitting is screwed onto the U-shape with two countersunk screws.
