I have an iPhone 15 pro max in an otter box defender case and really like the backbone controller but my phone was too big to fit in it and I didn't want to remove the case every time I play. A workaround I've seen online to allow the backbone controller to open more is to take the screws out of the main bracket pieces for the middle part of the controller but I don't like that idea as you have to be mindful of how far you open it or you can rip the controller ribbons so I redesigned these replacement internal brackets to allow the controller to be opened up at to the max width without risking damage to the ribbon cables.
I've included 2 files, one that's the original length in case you want to modify the size yourself or just want to reprint replacement pieces (Original Backbone Adapter.stl) and I've included the extended version that maxes the width out (Extended Backbone Adapter.stl).
In order to install these, you will need to fully disassemble your backbone controller and replace the internal pieces with these. You'll also need to remove the springs as they won't be long enough to work with it. Since you can't use the springs, I designed these to be a bit thicker so they have more drag and are a stiffer to open and close. The extension gives you about 1 ¼" of extra space BUT the side effect is it makes it so the controller doesn't close as small as before, it's about 1 ¼" wider when fully closed.
Please feel free to remix this to improve its design, improve the fit, or to make it work with other versions of backbone controllers.
NOTE: I've designed this using my call of duty edition V2 controller so your ribbon cable length, the overall part design itself, or the backbone controller sizes itself may vary.
NOTE: To make this work with my otterbox defender, I also purchased the USB extension below. I'm still working on creating an adapter that goes over the USB C extension that makes it so the phone isn't resting directly on the USB C port, but haven't figured it out yet. I'll add it to this listing as well when I'm done. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B08RN42R76?ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title&th=1
