This magnetic or “mag safe” connector was originally designed for programmable LED strips. uses 2x 3 mm magnets to hold together. The connector itself is a clamshell design that entraps 1mm pogo pins (NON affiliate amazon link below) I've included pictures of a completed print and 2x assembled connectors. it works surprisingly well. The pogo pins need no glu or anything else to hold them in place. The magnets do need to be glued in place, and off the shelf superglue works just fine. (Make sure you have the magnetic polarity correct). The connector faces are labeled for a 4 wire individually programmable ( 5 for 5volt, s for signal, r for return, G for ground).
I have included the fusion 360 source file, as well as a prusa slicer project complete with working settings. I print these out at .15mm layer height due to the parts being so small.
I am calling this v1. There are a couple design issues:
- this design is designed to be completely symmetrical, resulting in the pogo pin heads on one side, contact pogo pin heads on the other side. This is by far from ideal.
- no strain relief
- the design assumes you a VERY good at soldering because there is very little room for the wire to pogo pin connection
- I really want to re-design this for an even more compact connector
