Epstein-Barr Virus is a double-stranded DNA virus which causes lifelong infection in human B-cells. EBV was one of the first human viruses linked to rarely initiating a cancer, Burkitt's Lymphoma. The EBV viral particles are covered in a lipid double-membrane (not shown) and the capsid sits inside this membrane or "envelope".
Cryo-EM is a new advanced imaging technique in which thousands of 2D electron microscopy images are taken of a frozen "grid" of proteins. A 3D model is then calculated from averaging those images at near atomic resolution. This CryoEM map of the EBV viral particle was completed by Zhen et al., 2024. Journal of Virology. [Model data: EMDB-46986].
Model was printed at 0.1mm height with organic supports, 10% gyroid infill and 3-tone filament for a really cool multi-color effect. One of my favourite 3D model virus prints tbh.
