1.1. Purpose

Basic Function:
Functions similarly to an RC guide with a much better recharge time constant, removing the need for doping of the dielectric.

Core Behavior:
A guide structure most reminiscent of an RC guide where instead of doping the dielectric, a thin layer (200-500 angstroms) of aluminum or molybdenum is deposited on the inside of the guide channel. This metallic layer will receive emitted electrons without directly appearing as a ground for the EV to flow to. The metal being in contact with both vacuum and dielectric will behave as a capacitor, charging up and repelling the EV.
The charge deposited by the EV can be bled off through a resistive and inductive lead embedded in the guide structure. Through this the charge can reliably bleed off, without relying on a doped dielectric, or fearing that the EV itself takes that path to ground, in a similar way as the LC guide structure's stubs repel any incoming EVs despite being connected to ground.
The description provided in the patent highlights using a cover plate which is also coated with a thin layer of conductive material at the guide channel's location as being recommended, unless electron emission from the top of the guide structure is desired.

Scale & Format:
While there are two scale/size factors that matter a lot, the effect scales to all size guides according to the patent. The two factors in question are the thickness of the coating (~200-500 Angstroms of conductive metal) and the inductance of the stub bleeding charge to ground (must appear to the fast-travelling EV as a stub, not a short).
We'll take the diagram to refer to a channel of 50x50 microns.

Assembly Notes:
Device is meant to be assembled with thin film methods and have metallic coating sputtered on. The way by which this layer would need to be sputtered on is not entirely clear, though the most reasonable option seems to be long-throw PVD sputtering. By tilting the piece and sputtering a relatively straight beam of Mo onto the floor (0 degrees), left wall (45 degrees) and right wall (-45 degrees), a coating as close to even as can be reasonably expected could be achieved.

2. Device materials and environment

2.1. Materials

Suggested Materials:

• Metallic Coating: molybdenum or aluminum
• Dielectric: Alumina

The dielectric can be undoped alumina since the charge will be bled off through the metallic coating and high resistance/impedance connection to ground.

2.2. Operating Conditions

Electrical:

• The potential applied to the bleed-off line is referred to as ground, so ground should be fine.
• Another potential can also be held, provided that upon the fast approach of the EV the surface does not present itself as a short.

Environment:

• The description does not elaborate, though it does hint at use without a cover plate for its feature as an electron source, which is described in column 53 to occur best at a gas pressure in the range of of 10^-3 Torr.
