Napping on the window seat with a critter in your arms- the last thing you want to do is sit up and dislodge the warm fuzzy thing to see who's coming up the driveway. This steerable mirror makes it possible to have a look without sitting up.
All printed parts are made from PLA.
Support ‘touching buildplate’ is needed on:
-Mirror Mount _03 and
-Gear Box_09
Fill:
-100% on all parts.
Hardware:
-6: 4mm id x 8mm od bearings
-14: M3 x 5mm Heatset Inserts; Note: Bevel Gear Block is used to hold and align Bevel Gears while the heatset inserts are added.
-7: M3 x 5m socket head grub screws
-2: M3 x 12mm socket head cap screws
-8: M3 x 6mm socket head cap screws
-20 cm length of 4mm dia rod (I used 5/32" dia brass rod from Amazon)
-2: 10 cm lengths of 4mm dia rod
-1: plastic mirror; available from hardware stores. Cut it down to approx 12cm square
Tools:
-M3 tap and a 2.2mm drill bit to clean out inserts after they've cooled down.
-Hand drill or low speed mototool.
-Heat set tool
-Set of metric hex keys
Assembly:
- Print all parts; make two: Gear Boxes
- Insert all Heatset inserts:
Note: use the Bevel_Gear_Block to stabilize the Bevel Gears under the Heatset insert tool. Clean up Heatset holes with the drill and then carefully re-tap them to get rid of any interfering PLA.
3. Slide two: shaft collars onto the 20cm length of 4mm dia rod
4. Slide bearings onto either end of the rod.
5. Place the assembly onto the Base with the bearings in their pockets.
6. Capture the bearings with the Bearing Caps and fasten them down with M3 SHCS
7. Slide a Bevel Gear onto each end of the shaft but don't tighten them down yet.
8. Press bearings into the two Gear Boxes
9. Insert short rods into each Gear Box top bearing, then through a Shaft Collar, a Bevel Gear and into the lower bearing.
10. When the shaft is almost through the lower bearing snug the shaft collar against the roof of the Gear Box and tighten it in place.
11. Put an assembled Gear Box on either end of the Base. Fasten them loosely with the SHCS
12. Maneuver the two Gear Boxes until all the Bevel Gears engage properly and tighten everything down.
13. Slide the knob over one of the short rods and tighten the setscrew
14. Slide the Mirror Grip over the other short rod and tighten it down
15. Insert the mirror into the Mirror Grip and secure it with a grub screw; make sure the screw doesn't stick out.
16 Slide the Mirror Grip into the Mirror Mount and then tilt the mirror as needed: from my second floor window about ten degrees is plenty. Secure the assembly with another screw.
Using it:
You will need a flat window sill at least 6 inches or 15cm deep. If it's not you'll need to add an extension (like I did; see photo)
