The rotating rings provide a very interesting optical illusion by seemingly rotating upon each other's edge, when in fact they are printed as a single piece.

This design uses only 6mm x 2 mm magnets to cause the rings to levitate and turn when you push with a finger.  See the similar design that uses a 120v powered magnet to cause the rings to levitate and rotate.

There are 20 6mm diameter by 2mm thick disc magnets that are super-glued into the base and also into the rotating rings.  Amazon cost:  $7 for 150 pieces.

During the installation of the magnets, they tended to inverse their positions and cause failure.  So, if you print the rings, watch out for this problem.

Just before the deadline, I added a longer skirt to the rings, so they would not fall off the base.  However, the validation that this design works better will be after this competition closes.

I first saw this on Dave Garroway's NBC Today Show, Channel 4, c1948.  His was 120 volt electrically powered.
