I built a tamagotchi inspired desktop companion/clock. Feed it, play with it, keep it alive and watch it evolve every few days. Everything is driven by a randomized algorithm, but the characters usually grow and survive for a week or two. When they die, you'll get an egg to hatch with a new character.  I've created animation sets for 6 different characters (each with 3 stages of evolution) which will should take a about 2 months to get through.
