We have some sunflowers. These get pretty big and - due to small pots - the stem wasn't stable enough to sufficiently support them in high winds. This quick hack allows us to stabilize the sunflower against our balcony without having hard contact - so that if the stem grows in diameter, it doesn't grow into the holder.
