The idea of a protoboard is to stick your components through the holes and solder them from the other side together. This ensures that they stay in place, cleans the circuit to avoid involuntary connections and eases the overall connection process.

While this model doesn't have the pad soldering of certain commercially available models (eases the soldering), it is still a good way to manage your tiny components and to ensure that they are properly connected.
