My friend has a PhD dissertation and he asked a small surprise, 3D printed gift, so I designed him a doctor's hat. The size and shape imitates finnish doctor's hat and is designed with measurements from an authentic doctor's hat.

Each department has a unique emblem, so I made versions of the hat with and without the emblem. The provided emblem is my view on the authentic emblem of the local university and not 100% accurate.

Additionally, in my personally printed version a logo of the research group is stamped on the bottom of the hat (the logo file is not included and the provided files are without the stamp).

I printed this on scale 0.4 and it took around 32m filament. Even the emblem printed nicely without supports.

My setup for printing:

• Delta printer with linear rails, Repetier firmware.
• PLA 1.75mm (eSUN).
• Nozzle 0.4mm.
• Brim 5mm.
• Perimeters 2.
• Solid layers top/bottom 4/3.

After printing I base painted the hat with base spray paint and glossy black. Then, I utilized typical miniature wargaming paints for golden emblem, matt belt under the emblem and some quick shading.

My protocol for creating the hat with Blender:
1) The body of the hat was set rigid.
2) I dropped a silk cloth on top of the body.
3) I pulled the rigid belt on top of the body and silk cloth.
4) Turned silk cloth rigid and cut extra cloth off.
5) "Glued" the body, silk cloth, brim, 2nd belt layer and emblem together (boolean - union).
