Summary
Waterproof and weatherproof, pole/pipe mounted junction box with board, battery, and antenna.
Run a waterproof POE ethernet cable out to it and up inside the pole, then through the interior wire tubes,
through the grommet and into the box. Inside, use a POE power splitter to split off the power and run
into a cheap USB power module to power the node with a USB C cable. This setup withstands rain, snow and
wind - even on a cheap PVC pipe. Use WiFi or Bluetooth to connect to the device. It's reliable, and works
well as tested in the real world. No water or bugs inside the junction box.
Construction notes:
Drill 3/4" (19mm) holes with a step-bit for both the antenna and the grommet. Use stainless steel screws for all if this will be used outside.
I used M2.5x6mm screws to screw the boards to the carrier plate, and zip-ties to hold everything else in place inside the box. The M5 wood screws that come with it to mount the back of the junction box to the pole-mount back plate are not stainless and will rust. Recommend they be replaced with stainless steel. 2 M4x10 machine screws are needed but not included, to mount the carrier plate inside the junction box. I installed a switch for the battery since I didn't want to have to remove the board from the carrier plate every time I wanted to cut power.
Photos are of prototypes, the RAK node photo is not the latest design, and they also elected to use the large strain relief junction box egress rather than the grommet - which required a different mounting than my pole mount that is designed to work with the grommet. Also note that in this photograph, they did not elect to drill support screws into the box and caulk them (which is recommended since the antenna is tall and can put a mechanical load on the box).
Black carrier plate photo with Heltec module is the latest of the photos of this design.
Heltec prototype is using an Alfa 915 antenna which uses a N-Male, which requires a different jumper cable part than the one mentioned below. This example also uses a direct USB C cable, but this is not recommended for outdoors - as is the Alfa antenna also not recommended for outdoors.

Notes:
Print the Junction Box holder on the right side, so that the pole mount slot is upward. This will yield the best outcome. Use AT LEAST 25% infill, as this box can tend to be a bit heavy and will break off the support in heavy winds unless it has physical strength. This design stands up to 60MPH winds, so unless you are in a tornado you're probably OK.
