The cleanliness of filament is one of the key factors for successful 3D printing. Dust and small particles entering the hotend can not only leave artifacts on the surface of the final product but also cause serious issues such as nozzle clogs. This can lead to a print failure and ruined models. That is why this compact and effective accessory was created. The filament cleaning filter ensures the filament is clean before reaching the extruder, guaranteeing stable printer operation and high-quality prints every time.

This filter was initially designed for the Bambu Lab X1C printer. However, its universal design allows it to be used with any 3D printer that feeds filament through a PTFE tube. Additionally, thanks to the funnel integrated into the filter, feeding filament into the tube becomes much simpler and more convenient, especially when the spool and tube are located at the back of the printer where access is limited. This accessory not only cleans the filament but also greatly simplifies routine tasks, making your 3D printing experience more comfortable and enjoyable.

Manufacturing and Materials

For creating this filter, I recommend using PETG. This material is highly smooth, minimizing friction and ensuring the filament passes through easily. PETG is also well-suited for the processes required in this project.

Materials and Tools

1. A fragment of a standard fitting with a diameter suitable for a 4 mm tube. Note that fitting locks may vary, so it’s important to use the model I tested. The channel for seating the fitting lock was specifically designed for this model.

To remove the fitting lock that secures the tube, you can use a gas torch. Once heated, the lock can be easily removed.

2. Rubber and nylon washers. These components can be transferred from the original fitting to our model.

3. Filtering material made from fine-grain packaging foam. To process it, you’ll need a punch tool with a 9 mm diameter. Use the punch to cut out a foam cylinder, then cut it almost through, creating a “booklet” shape.

4. Lubricant (Teflon-based). This is needed to make installing the lock into the filter body easier.

5. Vise or press. The fitting lock can be pressed into the filter body using these tools. It is recommended to lubricate the holes first to prevent misalignment and potential damage.

Assembling the Filter

1. Cut the foam into a cylindrical shape and make a cut to form a “booklet.”

2. Place the foam piece into the filter body.

3. Transfer the rubber and nylon washers from the original fitting.

4. Press the fitting lock into the filter body using a vise or press, ensuring the hole is lubricated beforehand.

5. Screw on the filter cap to complete the assembly.
