Please note - I created this as an exercise in learning FreeCAD and making a from-scratch project involving more than just printed parts. It's not parametric, it only fits the specific UV torch I found at a local store; and it's probably modelled in the most awkward, non-standard way possible. I'm sharing it simply because I have no reason not to. If it's useful to anyone, awesome.
Aside from being a learning project, I made this as a tool for “charging” my glow-in-the-dark prints. If you print a lot of glowy stuff, this might be useful for you too. Or anything else that needs a small box with a cheap UV light.
Filaments needed
- Any rigid plastic, white (I used PLA), approx 240g
- Transparent PETG, approx 17g
- TPU, any color, approx 0.3g
Non-printed parts
- 8x M3x5x5 heated insert
- 4x M3x10mm screw
- 4x M3x6mm screw
- 4x 22mm anti-slip foot pads (optional)

Print instructions
Print one of each part. “UV Box-Plate.stl” should be printed in transparent PETG. “UV Box-Cable Protector” should be printed in TPU. All other parts can be printed in any (reasonable) non-flex material of your choice, but should be white (except the electronics holder which can be any color you like).
You can mostly use whatever settings work for you, but walls should be Inner/Outer due to the overhangs. Note that the main part has some nasty overhangs near the bottom; I was able to greatly improve these by using a height range modifier to print infill before walls for several layers starting from the 2nd.
The main part needs supports for the bottoms of the hinges, and greatly benefits from supports at the top of the doorframe. The door needs supports on the hinges. Note that the door hinges break very easily while removing supports if printed in PLA (I did some test prints in PETG and they removed far more easily there); increasing the support Z distance can help. The remaining parts should not need supports.
When printing the electronics holder part, double-check your elephant's foot compensation. It's a very snug fit, and any elephant's footing can interfere.
Assembly instructions
- Install an M3x5x5 heated insert in each corner at the top of “UV Box-Main Unit”.
- Install an M3x5x5 heated insert in each of the four small holes near the middle of “UV Box-Top”. Note that these inserts are installed from the bottom of the model.
- Attach the four anti-slip foot pads in the recesses on the bottom of the main unit.
- Place the transparent PETG plate into place inside the box. The orientation doesn't matter.
- Insert the door's hinge pins into the hinges on the main body. If it's a rough fit or they don't turn smoothly, sand them down a bit, especially on the side that was closest to the bed during printing.
- Using four M3x6 screws, attach “UV Box-Top” to the top of the main body. The orientation doesn't matter.
- Cut the alligator clips off the USB to 4.5V cable, and thread the cable through “UV Box-Cable Protector”.
- Push the cut end of the wires through the hole in the top of “UV Box-Electronics Holder”.
- Push the cable protector into this hole. It's a tight fit but it will snap into place.
- Solder the red wire to the spring inside the torch's head.
- Strip the end of the black wire, then use electrical tape to firmly attach it to the metal thread inside the torch's head. (Solder doesn't seem to stick to it, but taping the wire worked fine.)
- Before going any further, plug the USB cable in and check it's working.
- Place the torch head in the large hole in the top of the box.
- Carefully lower the electronics holder over the torch head, pulling the cable through as you do so. You want to leave just a little bit of slack inside the electronics holder (hard to judge as you can't actually see it).
- Using four M3x10 screws, secure the electronics holder to the top of the unit.
Usage Instructions
(It is generally not critical to follow this exact order.)
- Put should-be-glowy-but-isn't object inside.
- Close door (optional).
- Plug in.
- Wait 15-30 seconds.
- Take glowy object out.
- Unplug.
