Summary
I use quite a few heat set inserts at work and we have always had issues getting the inserts perpendicular when using a soldering iron and "eyeballing" it. I found a cheap "drill press" stand online for use with rotary tools such as dremels. (I actually purchased the stand for $18. If you look around, you can find them for different prices but they all seem to be exactly the same.

If you follow the above link, you will see all of the heat set inserts that we typically use (tapered version). You can also see a link to the soldering iron we purchased, and all of the insert tools necessary to insert pretty much any possible brass insert for 3d printed parts. The whole setup will cost less than 175$ and is well worth it if you find yourself inserting a lot of these. This could be significantly cheaper if you only use a couple sizes of inserts. The tools for different sizes of inserts are 15$ each and made up the majority of our cost (purchased 8 @ 15$ each = $120) Let me know if you use this and how it works and post those makes!
