When designing those stands I had some key goals in mind:
- Have them all fit in each race's storage container for ease of use.
- Have lower stands for the interceptors which to allow them to fit "under" the cruisers/dreadnaughts when playing.
- Stability.
By trying to achieve (1)+(2) I sacrificed (3) a little, but I still find the stands stable enough.
As seen in the pictures, both (1) and (2) have been achieved, and the only place I actually need to put some minor effort in placing everything back is the planta interceptors, which need to be arranged 180 deg from each other to fit nicely.
Usage
The tall stands are used for all Cruisers, as well as the Dreadnaughts for Eridani, Planta and Mechanema,
The tall elliptical stands are used for the Dreadnaughts for Hydran, Orion and Descendants of Draco for added stability.
The Orion Dreadnaughts are still somewhat unstable, but I didn't want the stand to be wider than it already is.
The short stands are used for all interceptors.
Note that the existing holes in each of the cruisers and dreadnaughts are slightly different between the races, so some fit tightly and others are loose (at least in my copy of the game).
I haven't tested the Terran ships as I don't have them.
Interceptors
Because the interceptors don't have holes in them, the stands need to be glued into place.
As simply gluing it will always have a weak spot, I opted to drill into both the interceptors and the stands with a small drill, and used a metal rod when gluing (I used paper clips and a 1mm drill)
That's why the small stands have a 0.4mm hole in the top, as a guide for drilling.
I opted to drill into the stands and not to print with a hole already in place because I'm using an FDM printer and it's harder to have that kind of accuracy.
Printing
I printed with a clear PETG, with a 0.4nozzle, 4 shells and 0.2mm layer height.
Because the stands are tall and thin, and also to avoid stringing, I printed them in sequence and not in parallel.
I have a pretty large print head with an MDD and HeroMe, but still managed to squeeze 6 tall stands or 12 short ones in a single run.
