Project Overview
This project provides a durable, custom-fit solution for replacing broken or degraded OEM cup holders in furniture. Designed as a functional repair for a reclining couch, these inserts prioritize a clean aesthetic and a secure friction-fit to ensure they stay in place during use.
Design Features
Precision Fit: The outer diameter is tailored to match standard furniture cutouts, providing a seamless transition between the upholstery and the insert.
Ergonomic Lip: Features a low-profile, textured rim that covers any rough edges of the couch material while maintaining a comfortable, snag-free surface.
Optimized Depth: The internal cavity is deep enough to stabilize tall tumblers and bottles without being difficult to clean.
Technical Specifications
This model was developed and tested on a Creality Hi printer to ensure dimensional accuracy and structural integrity.
Material: PLA (shown) or PETG (recommended for heat resistance/longevity).
Infill: 15–20% Gyroid (provides excellent omnidirectional support).
Wall Count: 3–4 walls for maximum rigidity and to ensure the side walls don’t flex under the weight of a heavy drink.
Layer Height: 0.2mm for a balance of print speed and surface finish.
Supports: Used auto tree supports with z-offset of .21 and 3 top layers - for easy removal and clean finish
Installation Instructions
Remove the remnants of the original broken cup holder.
Clear any debris from the mounting hole.
Press the 3D-printed insert firmly into the opening. The tolerances are tight enough that adhesives are generally unnecessary, making them easy to remove for deep cleaning.
Designer’s Note
This was the first successful functional project on this specific hardware setup, proving the system's capability for producing high-quality, practical household components. It’s a perfect example of how 3D printing can extend the life of furniture with a customized, "better-than-original" part.
